Historian Professor Muntasir Mamun said, "There is controversy over the history of Chawkbazar. Some say that Arab merchants used to trade slaves here. Chalk is an Arabic word. It means ‘unhappy’ which means ‘slave seller’. There are rumors that slaves were traded here during the Mughal period. The famous Iftar Bazaar of Chawkbazar was established before 1857.
Nazir Hossain's book 'Dhaka of Legends' mentions,' Chawkbazar flourished before 1857. At that time a variety of delicious food shops were established in Chawkbazar. During Ramadan, Mughal food and various iftars were sold here.
Ahmed Hossain, a 70-year-old sherbet trader, said his grandfather also traded in sherbet during Ramadan. According to him, his family has been doing business in Chawkbazar for one and a half years. Abdul Kahhar, an iftar seller in Chawkbazar, gave similar information. He said that iftar business is in the market for six men.
Looking around the Chawkbazar area, it is seen that ‘Big Baap eats Pola’ at TK 600-450 per kg, Suti Kebab at TK 1000 to 1200 kg of cotton kebab, 300 to Shahi jilapi, 150 to 550 depending on the size of Khasir Halim.
